NASU, Others Begin Indefinite Strike Action

A joint union comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and some other unions have on Tuesday, November 14, declared a total and indefinite strike action.

The other unions include Senior Staff Association of Teaching Hospitals, as well as Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions.

This is following the expiration of the 15-day ultimatum issued by the group to the Federal Government on Monday, October 30, 2017.

The industrial action which the workers’ union say would commence today, November 14, is to protest the non-implementation of several agreements reached with the Federal Government on new salaries structures, unpaid earned allowances and a review of retirement age for members.

The general secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi speaking in Abuja today said that the strike action is the last option for his members, after the unions in the last five years, have entered into several agreements with the government, but have not been honoured.

The group is among other demands, protesting the non-payment of 12 months salaries arrears, unpaid earned allowances as well as the implementation of the new retirement age of 65 for its members.
