Angola: Government Offers 1,600 Post-Graduate Scholarships

According to the Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Maria do Rosário Sambo, who announced the fact Tuesday, the programme is funded by the European Union (EU).

Evaluated at 13 million euros, it focuses on the training of teachers and strengthens the capacity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) to create postgraduate courses.

According to the minister, who was speaking at the TPA’s Great Interview space, the programme aims to improve post-graduate programmes in the country’s Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) by providing them with capacity for internal post-graduate courses.

In the framework of the Development Programme for Science and Technology, Maria do Rosário Sambo indicated that 163 applications for postgraduate courses are currently under evaluation.

In another area of the interview, she said that the quality of teaching in HEIs necessarily depends on the continuous training of teachers at various levels.

To this end, “they must draw up a training plan for their staff, taking into account the existence of postgraduate training opportunities”.

The minister regretted the fact that there was a very low number of applications for post-graduate grants, as many teachers were supposed not to have the necessary requirements to apply for the grants.

At the country level, she said, only the faculties of Social Sciences, Law and Medicine, both organic units of the Agostinho Neto University, have postgraduate, master’s and doctoral courses.

In relation to performance evaluation, he said it was an important factor in the progression of the teaching career, given the degree of demand in the training of students.

She also stressed the need to provide HEIs with better infrastructures and better human resources in order to increase the course and, with that, the increase of students in public education.

When asked about the salaries of teachers in the sector, she considered it necessary to work for their improvement, stressing that it does not correspond to the wishes of the teaching community.

She considers that, compared to the wage scale in the SADC region, the country falls far short on this issue, that is why there is every need for a review.
